Free guide to great typography

Combining Typefaces is a free typography guide from Adobe Typekit. It got its start as a Five Simple Steps pocket guide, but since they've now closed their doors, it's been made available for free via the Typekit blog. It includes chapters on the background of typography, context, choosing typefaces, and judging combinations, and includes a critique of five real examples.

Weird things with emerging technologies

Eli.wtf is the website of a front end developer who likes to make weird and/or stupid things using emerging web technologies. The site includes a bright color scheme, awesome animations and an overall funky aesthetic. Plus, it includes Eli's awesome work, plus his fun projects.

Principles for good design

Good Design includes the well known 10 principles for good design from Dieter Rams, ranging from innovation to aesthetic to understandability. It's all laid out in beautiful minimalist fashion that follows its own rules. It's an excellent refresher about just what good design involves, while staying quick to read and digest.

Entire films in a single image

Jason Shulman creates images that are the "visual DNA" of various films throughout the years. He's captured a variety of classics, from Hitchcock's Rear Window to Citizen Kane to The Yellow Submarine. Some images are little more than shadows, while others have distinct images that can be made out. The one thing they all have in common is beauty.
