The best fonts this year

This list of the 101 best free fonts of 2016, so far is a fantastic resource for any typography junky who just can't seem to get enough fonts (especially free ones). There are sans serif, serif, display fonts, fonts with extended character sets and non-Latin characters, and much more.

The world's ugliest color

Australian researchers believe they've found the world's ugliest color, and by the look of it, they might be right. The color falls somewhere on the spectrum between baby poop and dried-out mustard—unappealing by pretty much any standard. But why did they bother identifying the hue? For tobacco packaging!

A new model for the app store?

Apple's App Store 2.0 is coming. The new model will be much more encouraging of the subscription model of pricing, with Apple taking a smaller cut after a user has subscribed to an app for a year (dropping their percentage from 30% to 15%). Subscriptions will also be open to all categories, including games, instead of just a few.

A new typeface for the London Underground

Monotype has unveiled the redesigned typeface for Transport for London, New Johnston. The new typeface is an update of the original typeface created by Edward Johnston in 1916. The goal was to make the typeface more relevant to today, including some new characters like a hashtag and ampersand.

A gorgeous new look for Google Fonts

The Google Fonts interface just got a facelift, and it is GORGEOUS. The original interface has remained largely unchanged since the service was launched, which didn't mesh with Google's Material Design standard. The new design, however, fits in perfectly among Google's other services and sites, and is very easy on the eyes.

The state of product design

Invision's Product Design Report maps out the data collected by the company in an online survey. The report was created by Column Five, who analyzed data from over 1650 designers from 65 countries, all working in design. It revealed tool preferences, career paths, working environment, and much more.

A new business venture for a web pioneer

Jeffrey Zeldman, one of the pioneers of the modern web, has just launched a new consulting venture: Studio.Zeldman. For anyone not familiar with Zeldman (is anyone not familiar with him?), he founded A List Apart, A Book Apart, and An Event Apart, wrote the bible of modern web design, created and hosted the Big Web Show, and a whole lot more.

A typographic exploration

It's a Date is an exploration of beautiful typography brought to you by Discover.typography, which is created by H&Co. There are a variety of beautiful designs, each of which uses a handful of fonts. Click on any design and you can see which fonts are being used. The site design itself is also gorgeous, and an inspiring example of good UI.

There is no grid...or is there?

There is no grid poses the idea that the use of grids contributes to formulaic and lazy designs. On the flip side, There is definitely a grid, talks about how grids are the best thing to ever happen to graphic design, and that they are a rational basis for organizing information, among other useful traits.
